The version of self-love our society pushes today is a very clouded version of what it means to love yourself. This diluted version of self-love serves as an excuse to not be relentless in our pursuit of the highest version of ourselves. It encourages us to coddle ourselves, teaching us it is okay to avoid things that make us uncomfortable. This is such a disservice, as it fosters a culture where individuals aren't fully equipped to serve others selflessly.

People who have established an unshakable love for themselves are so magnetic because we innately know that we will be cared for. We sense their cup is full, so we know they can help us if we need them to.

Hear me out: true self-love is both selfless and selfish and it should be a little hard.

Reflecting on my journey toward self-love, I've come to realize that prioritizing my needs can sometimes feel selfish, especially as a mother. It is hard to decide to go work out instead of spending that time with my son but caring for my body provides a regulated mom for Mags. It is also hard to go to sleep at a reasonable time instead of staying up with my husband who works nights, but planning to wake up before anyone else in my house allows me to read, journal, meditate, or pray in peace. All these behaviors along with getting adjusted weekly ensure I show up with a balanced nervous system, as my best self, and we owe that to those around us. Take this as a reminder that you must fill your cup to pour love into others.

I have had some major struggles with putting my needs first. If you don’t know my chiropractic story, I struggled with major anxiety and depression right out of high school and was put on an antidepressant. I had a bad response to the medication and it’s nothing short of a miracle I’m here. I decided it was better to live with frequent panic attacks than take the risk of trying a new medication. Fast-forward to joining the Health 1st Team and after my first month of care my panic attacks were gone. Experiencing this state of nervous system adaptability is what set the foundation for me to build a strong sense of love for myself. With this newfound state of trust in my innate ability and awareness, I came up with these rules if I ever start to feel that slip away:

1. Seek to improve yourself

Not only do you deserve the best version of you, but the people around you do too. For me this looks like working out or reading. I recently started jiujitsu classes, pushing myself to do something extremely foreign and uncomfortable to me, and I’m having a great time!

2. Go back to the water

Growing up 30 minutes from the ocean, we went to the beach very often. Water for me is very therapeutic and automatically puts me in a state of deep gratitude. During the summer I make as many stops at the beach as I can, even if it’s just for 10 minutes. In the winter I make time for baths.

3. Surrender

I’m a Christian so I surrender to God, but maybe this looks like surrendering to the universe for you.

4. Help others

Ed Mylett has a saying: If you are feeling HELPLESS, get HELPFUL! You have all heard about my 2 dogs and cat. Although most people think of pets in the sense of what they provide to humans, I have learned so much in caring for these animals. It keeps me grounded and humble. I also volunteer in the preschool room at my church most Sundays.

"You are most capable and qualified to help the person you used to be"

5. Get Adjusted

Having my nervous system working in a balance between fight-or-flight and rest and restoration has been such a game changer for me. When I am not working against my body to find balance, life is just so much easier.

Parting Words

My view of self-love has evolved drastically through my spiritual journey, particularly in studying the biblical verse: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” It's a reminder that our capacity to love and support others is intrinsically linked to the level at which we love and care for ourselves. As I aspire to make a positive impact on the lives of others, I recognize that nurturing self-love is an integral part of that journey.
