Resolution Check-In: Where I have failed and won

Resolution Check In

We’re a few weeks into the new year—how are those resolutions coming along? If you’re crushing it, congrats! But if you’ve hit a bump in the road or haven’t even started, I’m here to remind you: it’s never too late to start fresh.

Let me tell you about a lesson I learned the hard way. Last year I started drinking Diet Coke 🤦🏻‍♀️ I know! As expected, I started to crave it more and more, even though my body felt sluggish and bloated every time I drank it. I took the New Year as an opportunity to quit Diet Coke and thought if I am getting rid of this maybe I could also just get rid of coffee as well! As some of you know I have gallbladder issues and I have to be careful about what I eat, coffee being one due to the acidity!

Spoiler alert: I set myself up for failure. Those were two deeply ingrained habits and tackling them simultaneously wasn’t realistic. I’d crash and burn before noon every day, frustrated and caffeine-deprived. That experience taught me the value of creating goals that are not only meaningful but also realistic. I am still off Diet Coke, and happy to say this week I feel I am now at a place where I can kick coffee as well, so I am doing that this week!

If you’ve already slipped up on your resolution, or if you’ve been hesitant to set one, here’s the good news: you can restart at any time. Maybe now, with a few weeks of life experience in 2025, you can tweak your goals to better align with what’s achievable for you. The key is to approach your resolutions with wisdom, compassion for yourself, and a willingness to adapt.

Why Resolutions Fail

  • Unrealistic Expectations: Many resolutions are based on drastic changes that are hard to sustain.

  • Lack of Specificity: Goals like "get healthy" or "save money" are too vague, leaving no clear path forward. Instead set intentions such as “lose 10 pounds in 2 months” or “save $150 per month for the next 6 months.”

  • All-or-Nothing Thinking: Missing one workout or overspending once can lead to a sense of failure, prompting people to quit altogether. Perfection does not exist!

  • Absence of Accountability: Without someone or something to hold them accountable, it’s easy to let goals slip. Find a friend or post on socials for accountability.

Why Some Don’t Set Resolutions in the First Place

  • Fear of Failure: Past experiences of falling short can discourage people from trying again.

  • Overwhelm: Life is already busy, and the thought of adding new goals feels like an impossible task.

  • Skepticism: Some believe resolutions are a cliché or unnecessary.

Alternatives to Make 2025 a Better Year

Instead of setting traditional resolutions, try these strategies for a year of meaningful progress:

Set Intentions, Not Resolutions

Focus on how you want to feel in 2025. For example:

  • Financially: “I want to feel secure and confident in my money decisions.”

  • Emotionally: “I want to feel calm and grounded, even during challenges.”

  • Physically: “I want to feel energized and strong.”

Break Goals into Micro-Steps

Instead of setting lofty goals, focus on small, manageable actions:

  • Financial: Start by tracking your spending for a week instead of aiming to save $10,000.

  • Emotional: Commit to a daily 5-minute mindfulness practice rather than an hour-long meditation.

  • Health: Swap one sugary drink for water instead of overhauling your entire diet.

Focus on Systems, Not Outcomes

Create habits that naturally lead to success. For example:

  • Automate savings transfers instead of trying to save whatever is left at the end of the month.

  • Schedule daily walks or stretching sessions to stay consistent with movement.

  • Practice gratitude journaling to train your mind to focus on positivity.

Be Kind to Yourself

Progress is rarely linear. Celebrate small wins and recognize that setbacks are a natural part of growth. Self-compassion helps you stay motivated over the long haul.

Enlist Support

Accountability can come in many forms—whether it’s a friend, a coach, or a tracking app. Surround yourself with people and tools that keep you on track and inspired.

Invest in Your Wellness

Taking care of yourself is the foundation of all success. Prioritize:

  • Physical health: Chiropractic care, balanced nutrition, movement, and quality sleep.

  • Emotional health: Therapy, journaling, moving your body, or even carving out time to read a book.

  • Financial health: A session with a financial advisor or diving into personal finance resources/applications.

Your 2025 Vision

The key to creating lasting change isn’t a rigid resolution but a commitment to progress. Focus on small, consistent actions, prioritize your well-being, and build habits that align with your vision for a fulfilled and balanced life.

This year, skip the guilt of failed resolutions and embrace intentional living. You’ve got this!

What’s one small step you’ll take today to make 2025 a year to remember?

Here are a few tips to help you get back on track or start anew:

  • Reflect on What’s Realistic: Are your goals too ambitious? Break them down into smaller, manageable steps that set you up for success.

  • Focus on One Change at a Time: Avoid the mistake I made. Tackle one habit or goal before layering in another.

  • Find Your Why: Remind yourself why this resolution matters to you. When you connect with the deeper purpose, it’s easier to stay motivated.

  • Don’t Wait for Perfection: There’s no perfect time to start. Begin today, even if it feels messy or imperfect.

  • Support Your Nervous System: A healthy nervous system is essential for sticking to your goals. When your nervous system is balanced, you’re better equipped to handle stress, make clear decisions, and stay motivated. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or stuck, a nervous system check-in could be just what you need to get back on track.

Remember, resolutions aren’t about achieving perfection; they’re about progress and personal growth. Whether your goal is to prioritize your health, spend more time with family, or learn something new, small consistent steps will lead to big changes over time.
